The second course at La Zagaleta, is a 6,000-metre length 18-hole private members course, called Los Barrancos, loosely translated as ‘a rugged, mountainous landscape’. When first presented with this site in 2003 it was certainly one of the most challenging golf course sites in Europe we’d worked on, with a difference in elevation of almost 150m. It was designed and built between 2001 and 2005 – opened for play in May 2007.

The course is part of a stunning Costa del Sol residential/golf development on the ultra-exclusive private estate at La Zagaleta overlooking the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the Rif mountains of North Africa.

We developed all the golf course construction drawings and worked with local engineers, architects and ecologists to develop a full re-landscaping plan, utilising native Mediterranean species for the slope restoration and strategic planting on the golf course.

This site provided the perfect natural conditions where we were able to introduce our design philosophy of true ‘risk and reward’ golf.
